I’m constantly amazed training at the shitennou sessions in Japan. Their sense of distance/flow/timing confuses, disrupts and surprises. Having that fine sensitivity to punch under my nose just enough to make me react with minimal pain and without injury is a sign of how well they can control their own movement.

And if we can’t control our own movement, how can we be sensitive enough to flow with or direct someone else’s?

One of the guys from the lion dojo is going to start sessions on Tuesdays after the CNY festivities. These classes will be near Tanjong Pagar and not at dance arts.

Hopefully you will not have had too many pineapple tarts to attend.

Malcolm Gladwell wrote that, in order to become really good at something, you have to do it for ten thousand hours. ’The 10,000 Hour Rule’.

I calculated that if you only train once a week for an hour and a half, it would take you over one hundred and twenty-eight years to become an expert.

So please take this extra opportunity to train.

CNY and changes to training

The Chinese new year falls on the 3rd of February, which is a thursday.

There will be no training on this day!

Also there will be a change in training times.

As from the 17th of February onwards the sessions will be starting at 20:30 ending at 22:00

Break in training

Hi all,

Just to inform you that we’re taking a break from training at the dojo (but hopefully not from training by other means) from now until the new year. The Thursday night training will re-commence on the 6th of January.

The new year will see opportunities to train on additional days.

The theme for next year will be ‘Kihon Happou’.

I’m really looking forward to the next year. A gut feeling is telling me to visit Japan sooner than planned.

My brain seems to have finished defragmenting after the previous trip to japan (and I’m pretty sure some files were lost along way). It was an interesting trip.

I attended a lot of Someya Sensei classes. As is the year’s theme, we trained with the idea of tachi. Also with a bit of yari and naginata thrown in (I wonder if the Singapore MRT network would have a problem with me carting my wooden ones about on their trains?).

One thing that he said stuck in my mind. Kihon, and how we must really make sure we get our foundation right. Some people call the kihon ‘basics’ and I worry that this gives the wrong impression. IMO, the translation suits the words ‘foundation’ and ‘basis‘ better. He said a lot of people talk about doing henka and said:

‘Henka of what?’

If we don’t work on our foundation and its principles, how can we do a variation based on them?

Watching the godan test at the hombu one day was interesting. Soke encouraged the visiting shihan to really cut down for the test and not to stop at the tip of the head. The importance of rolling was also mentioned. It was also asked by a shihan if all the people sitting the test were already yon-dan. I watched a lot of people have future opportunities to pass.

An interesting trip which turned my brain to soup. Hopefully I can return for second helpings much sooner this time.

Here is the first event of the new decade and it is a big one. I have Pete Reynolds, a Japanese resident and regular at Soke’s training, coming in to teach at my club.

Pete has lived in Japan a long time now and many of you who have visited Japan may have met him or certainly seen him at training.

I hope you will make an effort to support this event as Pete will have many interesting and current details to teach.

We normally have a good turn out , but there are a load of people who training that don’t seem to attend seminars. This attitude really doesn’t help you progress in this very complex art. Also it would be nice to see you at these seminars.
